Summer movie season is officially heating up, and the Summer 2026 film lineup is packed with major franchise releases, prestige dramas, horror films, superhero blockbusters, and several ambitious originals that could dominate conversation over the next few months. From Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and Supergirl, to A24 projects like BACKROOMS and The Death of Robin Hood, studios are leaning heavily into recognizable IP while still leaving room for riskier, filmmaker driven releases.
This year’s most anticipated summer movies also reflect how wide theatrical audiences have become. Horror continues to dominate interest online, superhero films remain massive draws, and original comedies like The Breadwinner are arriving with breakout potential thanks to major talent and strong audience curiosity. Whether you’re looking for large scale studio spectacles, indie genre films, or crowd pleasing popcorn entertainment, Summer 2026 has one of the strongest movie slates in recent years.
BACKROOMS
Release Date: May 29
There’s a very real chance BACKROOMS becomes the movie that leaves audiences staring at ceilings at 2 a.m. wondering why they watched it alone.
Based on the viral internet horror concept that somehow evolved into full blown nightmare fuel, the A24 sci fi horror film follows a mysterious doorway that appears inside the basement of a furniture showroom. Which already sounds unsettling in a deeply specific way. There’s something about fluorescent lighting and empty commercial spaces that horror filmmakers have finally figured out how to weaponize.
Directed by Kane Parsons and produced by horror heavyweight James Wan alongside an absurdly stacked producing team, the film stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Renate Reinsve, and Mark Duplass.
If this thing lands, it could own online conversation all summer.

THE BREADWINNER
Release Date: May 29
One of the biggest wildcards of the summer might also be one of the funniest.
The Breadwinner marks the feature film debut of comedian Nate Bargatze, and honestly, the premise feels weirdly perfect for him. The film follows a husband and father trying to hold together total domestic chaos after his wife suddenly becomes wildly successful following a Shark Tank appearance.
The cast alone makes this worth watching, featuring Mandy Moore, Colin Jost, Kumail Nanjiani, Will Forte, and Zach Cherry.
And frankly, if Bargatze’s dry panic energy translates properly to film, dads across America may feel seen in ways they were not emotionally prepared for.
THE DEATH OF ROBIN HOOD
Release Date: June 19
This is probably the most quietly dangerous movie of the summer. Instead of another flashy Robin Hood reboot, The Death of Robin Hood appears to be leaning hard into mortality, regret, violence, and redemption. Directed by Michael Sarnoski, the film stars Hugh Jackman as an aging Robin Hood confronting the damage left behind after a lifetime of crime and bloodshed.
Add Jodie Comer and Bill Skarsgård into the mix and this immediately starts feeling less like a traditional adventure film and more like an existential medieval fever dream.
SUPERGIRL
Release Date: June 26
The pressure surrounding Supergirl is enormous because this is one of the first major tests of the new DC era under James Gunn.
Directed by Craig Gillespie, the film follows Kara Zor El on an interstellar revenge mission after a devastating personal attack. The cast includes Jason Momoa, Matthias Schoenaerts, and David Krumholtz.
There’s a lot riding on this one. Fans are hoping it balances emotional character work with the kind of large scale spectacle DC desperately needs to get right again. No pressure!

THE INVITE
Release Date: July 2026
Any movie where Seth Rogen, Olivia Wilde, Penélope Cruz, and Edward Norton gather for a dinner party that spirals into emotional destruction immediately earns attention.
Directed by Olivia Wilde and released through A24, The Invite sounds like exactly the kind of uncomfortable relationship drama that starts with awkward wine conversation and ends with somebody emotionally detonating near a kitchen island. Which is honestly one of cinema’s greatest traditions.
SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY
Release Date: July 31
This is probably the biggest movie of the summer and probably the deepest super hero flick of in a long time. Instead of resetting Peter Parker into another clean superhero adventure, Spider-Man: Brand New Day picks up four years after No Way Home, with Peter now living completely alone after erasing himself from the memories of everyone he loves.
That premise already feels heavier than most Marvel setups, and the film’s darker direction could end up giving Tom Holland his strongest material yet as Spider Man. The cast also includes Zendaya, Sadie Sink, Jon Bernthal, and Mark Ruffalo.

INSIDIOUS: OUT OF THE FURTHER
Release Date: August 21
The Insidious franchise has quietly become one of horror’s most reliable performers, and Insidious: Out of the Further looks ready to push the mythology into even stranger territory.
This time the story follows a mother who discovers she can not only enter The Further, but actually bring entities back into the real world. Which feels like the exact kind of ability nobody should ever have under any circumstance. The return of Lin Shaye alone is enough to get longtime horror fans interested, but the concept itself feels creepy enough to potentially give the franchise a real jolt of energy again.
