Man on Fire First Look: Netflix Screening in LA Sets the Tone for a Gritty, Character Driven Series
Netflix gave Man on Fire an early spotlight this week with a special screening at the Tudum Theater in Los Angeles, offering a first look at what could quietly become one of the platform’s more grounded, performance driven series of the year.
In attendance were Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who also serves as executive producer, along with cast members Billy Blanco Jr. and Polly Marinho. Behind the camera, executive producer and showrunner Kyle Killen and director Steven Caple Jr., who helmed the first two episodes, were also on hand to introduce the project.
The screening focused on Episode 1, which sets up the story of John Creasy, a former Special Forces mercenary dealing with severe PTSD while attempting to rebuild some version of a normal life. That reset does not last long. The series quickly pushes him back into conflict, framing the story less as a traditional action thriller and more as a character study about control, trauma, and redemption.
Following the screening, the night shifted into something more conversational with a live taping of The Ringer’s Higher Learning podcast, hosted by Van Lathan and Rachel Lindsay. The discussion with Abdul-Mateen II and Caple Jr. leaned into the creative direction of the series, touching on tone, performance, and the challenge of reinterpreting a story that already carries a strong legacy.
Based on A.J. Quinnell’s novels, Man on Fire is structured as a seven episode series, with Killen leading as writer and showrunner. The directing lineup includes Caple Jr. for the opening episodes, followed by Vicente Amorim, Clare Kilner, and Michael Cuesta, giving the series a mix of visual styles while maintaining a consistent narrative throughline.
The cast surrounding Abdul-Mateen II includes Billie Boullet, Bobby Cannavale, Alice Braga, Scoot McNairy, and Paul Ben-Victor, rounding out a group that leans more toward character depth than spectacle.
Man on Fire premieres April 30, 2026 on Netflix.
