The outpouring of love following the death of James Van Der Beek has turned into real world support for the family he left behind.
A GoFundMe launched by close friends has raised more than $2 million to help Van Der Beek’s wife Kimberly and their six children navigate life after his passing. The actor died February 11 at age 48 after a private but lengthy battle with colorectal cancer.
According to organizers, years of medical care and treatment costs placed significant financial strain on the family. The fundraiser was created to help them remain in their home and give their children some stability during an otherwise devastating moment.
In a statement shared shortly after the campaign hit its goal, friends thanked donors for showing up in a way that went beyond money. They described the response as a reminder that community still matters and that Van Der Beek’s spirit continues to bring people together.
Van Der Beek became a defining face of late 90s television as Dawson Leery on Dawson’s Creek, later expanding his career with roles in film and television including Varsity Blues. In recent years, he was open about his cancer diagnosis and actively sought ways to offset treatment costs, including auctioning memorabilia connected to his career.
The family has requested privacy as they grieve while expressing deep gratitude for the overwhelming support they have received.
