There can be only one, and apparently it was always going to be Henry Cavill.
New first-look images from the long-in-development Highlander reboot have finally surfaced, and Cavill stepping into the role of an Immortal swordsman feels less like casting news and more like a correction to the timeline. Long coat. Sword in hand. The quiet confidence of someone who’s seen a few centuries come and go and isn’t impressed by your modern problems.
This reboot has been hovering around Hollywood for years, but now it’s starting to feel real, and more importantly, intentional. With Chad Stahelski directing, the expectation is not just flashy sword fights but clean, grounded action with weight behind every swing. If you’ve seen what he did with John Wick, you already know he understands how to make violence readable, physical, and mythic without turning it into noise.
Cavill is a smart choice here for reasons that go beyond biceps and jawlines. He’s at his best when playing characters steeped in lore, characters who carry history without needing to explain it out loud. He doesn’t undercut mythology with irony, which is critical for Highlander. This entire franchise works if the developers fully commit to its sincerity. Immortals. Decapitations. Ancient grudges. Queen on the soundtrack. They’ll really have to lean in to it.
The early images suggest a version of Highlander that’s more grounded than glossy. Less superhero, more lived-in warrior. The original film became a cult classic because it treated its wild premise with absolute seriousness. When Highlander forgot that in later iterations, things went off the rails fast and audiences moved on. This new take looks like it understands the assignment.
There’s something that looks quietly perfect about Cavill landing here at this point in his career. After some very public franchise turbulence in his role as Superman at DC Studios, Highlander might give him a central role that’s mythic without being overexposed or boxed in. If it works, it might become a long-term cinematic home rather than a one-off swing.
There can be only one. For now, it looks like Cavill earned the sword.
