If there is one thing Star Wars does exceptionally well, it is turning its villains into the most interesting characters in the room. Darth Maul is the ultimate example, and Lucasfilm just dropped a trailer that proves his story is nowhere near finished.
Star Wars: Maul Shadow Lord is a new animated series that drags Maul out of the shadows and throws him back into the center of the galaxy’s messiest power struggles. Set after The Clone Wars, the show follows Maul as he tries to rebuild a criminal empire in the early days of the Empire, while staying one step ahead of Palpatine and his enforcers.
This is not the silent assassin from The Phantom Menace. This Maul is shaped by loss, betrayal, and a dangerous obsession with control. Sam Witwer returns to voice the character, continuing a performance that has quietly become one of the most layered in the entire franchise.
The series introduces a new planet called Janix, a neon drenched noir world that feels more cyberpunk than space opera, and it fits Maul perfectly. While on the run from Imperial forces and Inquisitors, he crosses paths with Devon Izara, a Twi’lek runaway with strong dark side energy, along with a disillusioned young Jedi who may become the apprentice Maul has been searching for.
Visually, the animation blends the familiar Clone Wars style with heavier, more cinematic textures that give the series a darker, more mature tone. This does not feel like Saturday morning Star Wars. It feels like late night Star Wars.
Maul Shadow Lord premieres with a two episode debut on Disney+ on April 6, and it looks ready to prove that the most compelling stories in this galaxy are still being told by its villains.
