SXSW is no stranger to genre bending premieres, but Pretty Lethal arrives with a hook sharp enough to cut glass and pointe shoes.
The film follows five elite ballerinas on their way to a high stakes dance competition who are already barely holding it together as a group. Old resentments. Competitive tension. Silent treatment energy so thick you could stretch it. Then their bus breaks down deep in a remote forest because the universe clearly enjoys escalation.
With nowhere else to go, they seek shelter at a secluded roadside inn run by Devora Kasimer, played by Uma Thurman, a reclusive former ballet prodigy whose vibe alone suggests every life choice should be immediately reconsidered. From the moment they arrive, the movie lets the unease simmer. This is not a jump scare situation. This is a slow dawning realization that something is deeply wrong.
When things turn violent, Pretty Lethal finds its killer hook. These dancers do not suddenly become action heroes. They survive by doing the only thing they truly know how to do. Years of brutal training turn into strategy. Discipline becomes endurance. Grace becomes precision. Pointe shoes stop being cute and start being terrifying.
The cast brings serious energy to the concept. Maddie Ziegler, Lana Condor, Iris Apatow, Avantika, and Millicent Simmonds form a fractured but compelling ensemble that sells both the rivalry and the eventual necessity of teamwork. Watching them weaponize ballet is equal parts thrilling and darkly funny.
Director Vicky Jewson clearly understands the fun of the premise and leans into it without losing control. The film moves confidently between tension, horror, action, and sharp humor, creating something that feels fast, physical, and slightly unhinged in the best way.
Premiering at the SXSW Film Festival, Pretty Lethal feels tailor made for a crowd that loves discovering genre movies that swing hard and commit fully. For those who miss mid budget thrillers with a wild idea and the confidence to execute it, this one lands squarely on the must watch list.
After its SXSW world premiere, Pretty Lethal will stream globally on Prime Video starting March 25, 2026. Dance like your life depends on it is no longer a metaphor.
